Under Promise and Over Deliver?

by Tim Yeager, CPA

We’ve all probably heard the old adage, “Under Promise and Over Deliver.”  This is suppose to be great advice because your customers will walk away thrilled!  The problem is, it doesn’t work.  Not if you are looking for new clients/customers, that is.

If you really want to grow your business you need to “Promise A Lot and Deliver Even More!”  No matter what type of business you have, this holds true.

If you have a new start-up restaurant and you want to draw new customers in, what are you going to do?  ”Under promise?”  Are you going to advertise and say, “Our food is average and our servers have bad attitudes.”  And, then when the customers come in you’re going to “over deliver” with great food and friendly servers?  No way!  You’ve got to advertise that your restaurant has the best “whatever”, best dining experience, etc.  Then, of course, you have to deliver on that promise!

Most people are used to being disappointed by businesses.  You can stand out by promising a lot, simply doing what you said you were going to do, and, then do a little bit more.
